The Brief

A subculture is a cultural group within a larger culture, often having beliefs or interests at variance with those of the larger culture. Countless subcultures exist throughout the United Kingdom; niche groups with specific interests, styles, or practices that set them outside of the mainstream.

To celebrate these rich subcultures, Huck magazine are releasing a limited edition collectable supplement for its monthly subscribers. The supplement called “HSC”, will sit inside each bi-monthly release of 2018. Each release will have a different report on a modern subculture. You have been commissioned to beautifully design the supplement for Februarys’ release. Your design must capture the essence and energy of a modern subculture.

The Outcome

I decided to make the supplement about the sneakerhead community because it’s something that I was a part of and wanted to understand more about. Whilst the subculture has been around since the 1980’s in the early years of hip hop, it’s a subculture that has only been emerging from its underground roots within the last decade or so. Due to time constraints, tutors asked us to find articles for body copy. The zine uses varying weights and textures of paper to convey a sense of tactility that enhances the meaning of specific pages.
